Yes it is a very good article and one we can all learn a lot from if we read and take notice. It is very difficult to judge how successful any forum will be until you start, Ive had forums on Yahoo for years with hundreds of members but new ones come and people move - its dog eat dog even with forums.

Even if your forums the best there is in its class - topic, that no guarantee, but adding to it what you think other dont have is a big advantage - doing the same BUT better is one way to attract members.

Also making people want to be members - give them a sniff as a guest - have two seconds one open to guests/public and then a members only so people join to get the full features.

Also its important to use facebook, youtube and the rest of these social sites, there is a lot of competion out there for users and everyone is competing against each other. You have to be a sales and marketing wizzkid as well as a forum designer YOU need to be mutli skilled and good at them all too succeed

ok I will let someone else add a bit and I can add more later since this is an old thread

How to build a successful forum is the million dollar question without an answer.

Ive run multiple forums some with a few hundred users and 300 posts a day, and theres no one way to be successful.
In my experience the key thing is to keep users happy, make it personal. You have to try and promote discussion on whatever topic it is that your forum is based on. Post interesting stories, ask questions and it will generate discussions and opinions and thats what forums are all about.
Promoting your forum is important too like said before use facebook, myspace, twitter, tumblr, blogspot etc.. and plug your forum all you can.

The forum built contain the so many steps. Decide upon a niche to target with your community,Find some other people that are interested in building the community with you,Decide on the theme, and find some friends that are interested in working with you on your new community, you will need to decide on a hosting plan for the forum,Select which forum software you want to use,Know that installation instructions will be different depending on which forum software you choose, but in most cases, you will have to download and unzip the forum software after downloading it, upload it into the publicly accessible directory of your web server via ftp, and then create a MySQL database for it ,Know that before making the forum public, it is a good idea to create maybe two or three threads in each forum area, so that visitors to the site, and new users, will have somewhere to post. :)
